How to Download Public GitHub Release Assets

Open-source software projects on GitHub publish compiled binaries, installer packages, and source tarballs via Releases. Here is how to query and download them cleanly.

1. Anatomy of a GitHub Release

A GitHub release is built around a Git commit tag (e.g. v2.4.0). In addition to automatic source code archives (.zip and .tar.gz), maintainers can attach binary assets compiled for various operating systems (Linux .tar.gz, Windows .exe or .zip, macOS .dmg).

2. Using the Official GitHub REST API

Our GitHub Release Downloader communicates with GitHub's official endpoint:

GET https://api.github.com/repos/{owner}/{repo}/releases

This provides real-time release details, download count metrics, asset sizes, and official download links directly from GitHub's Amazon S3 storage infrastructure.

3. Verifying Cryptographic Checksums

Many open-source maintainers publish SHA256 checksums alongside their release notes. Before executing downloaded software binaries, verify their hash in your terminal:

# On Windows PowerShell:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 ./package.exe

# On macOS / Linux:
sha256sum ./package.tar.gz
